The area was settled by a French immigrant named William Fuquay, who moved into a remote agricultural community named Sippihaw. Decades later his great-grandson found a spring containing mineral water that was believed to carry medicinal properties. This attracted more settlers and tourists. Though the springs were eventually sold the year before the Civil War, the name Fuquay would remain and become half of the moniker the city carries today.
At the turn of the 20th century, the spring grew in popularity, and rail cars were installed to give paying visitors night rides. This resulted in a resort type boom, with restaurants and hotels, along with dance areas springing up to support the main attraction. After a substantial period of growth, the town was incorporated in 1909 under the name Fuquay Springs.
While Fuquay Springs was primarily a tourist attraction, the border town of Varina was agricultural. Its successful crop growth resulted in its coming into a major trading hub for food and especially tobacco. Later, as the springs appeal began to decline, Fuquay Springs diversified its industrial economy, and the two towns would merge in 1963. Today, Fuquay-Varina covers 12.2 square miles, with 0.08 being water. The population as of the 2010 census is 17,937. It is another rapidly growing town in Wake County, with a 2015 estimate of 23,907 residents.
Being located in Wake County, Fuquay-Varina children attend the collective county school district. Within the borders of the town, there are four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.
For a small but growing town, there is no shortage of parks. There are 14 named parks inside Fuquay-Varina. The one that carries the most historical significance for Fuquay-Varina is the Fuquay Mineral Spring Park. It is where the natural spring that helped give birth to the modern town can be found. The spring house there has been restored. Around the area is a brick path, benches, and picnic tables. A simple, but tranquil area, this park is geared towards passive recreation.
South Park, on the other hand, is a sports oriented facility. While it contains a playground and grilling area, the majority of the park is made up of baseball and soccer fields, along with a multi-purpose field. Many organized leagues take place here, with a concession stand and score booth to show for it.
The Carroll Howard Johnson Environmental Education Park is where learning meets fun. They have teaching kits for temporary use with the various nature trails. The diverse flora and fauna can be observed here from different heights, and if you want to bring something to eat while you have fun learning, there is a picnic area available, along with bathrooms.
Soccer and baseball is of particular interest in this area, with nine of the 14 parks containing soccer fields, and five having one or more baseball/softball fields. The fields are kept in great condition, and Turf Wizards can replicate that thick lushness at your home.
